Being surrounded by 4 out of the 5 Great Lakes, it’s no surprise that Michigan has more lighthouses dotting the shores than any other state. All of Michigan’s lighthouses are feats of engineering. Not only are they build to withstand constant beatings from oncoming waves, they need to survive Michigan’s famous winters too. They seem like such a simple concept, but these amazing structures are what keep the Great Lakes safe to travel.
One of my favorite lighthouses has got to be Little Sable Point just south of Silver Lake State Park. There’s just something about the location of it that is really appealing to me. The giant brown brick tower fits in nicely with the dunes that surround it and it just seems to overpower everything around it, even though the light itself is such a simple design. I can’t really describe the feeling of being near it, it’s just an amazing light.
